sister overdrive : two birds at night

recorded in june 2011, during a late night recording in the city of kifissia this is a field recording of 2 nightbirds (gionis in greek) done by yannis kotsonis (aka sister overdrive) which was unearthed a couple of weeks ago when i asked him for a short field recording extract for an upcoming collective project am working on. no more no less. what's better for comeback after almost a year & a half hibernation?

i discovered kiko esseiva's work a few years ago thanks to jason of 1000+1 tilt when he distributed his debut cd in greece, then he did a release of his and also set up a vague live set the document of which came out on kukuruku recordings.

this one came accidentally while working on another project. is music for choreography and i totally love it. i hope you'll share the enthusiasm!

yiorgis sakellariou 'abeliona'

a couple of weeks ago yiorgis sakellariou emailed a field recording of his village. it was shelved on my hard disc as due to lack of time i couldn't listen it normally.
meanwhile he send me this field recording of bells that he chanced upon one day while spending a creative month in his village. but let's allow yiorgis to explain the rest...

on July 29, 2010, in the village of abeliona, an old woman died. her funeral took place the next day and she was buried in the same cemetery as my grandfather, whose name i have inherited. i went to his grave and i saw my name written on the marble while the sound of the funeral church bells was still echoing inside my mind. somehow, it was like staring at myself…

abeliona is located in the region of messinia, in peloponnesus, 840 meters above sea level. its population is about 30 people.

anthi thanou & panagiotis koulelis

fairytales and birthday parties, at least it could be a title to describe the best the situation. i met anthi thanou & panagiotis koulelis thanks to the birthday party of little orion in xanthi a few months ago & a flabbergasting fairytale evening in the city's folk museum. till then i only knew them by name and had only listened their gorgeous book/cd with fairytales.

i was mesmerized by their performing style, as each of their sets is a different and sweet kind of magic. you gotta experience it to understand it and realize why they are considered as one of the leading duos of the fairytale telling / singing / perfoming (etc..) in greece, no kiding at all!

so while the birthdays of hara (a.k.a. cressida of the genital grinder zine fame) & her friend lantis were in early july there were various ideas dropped of what to do... a party, what kind of party, blah blah when suddenly the fairytales idea emerged (as we are all nuts with fairytales) without second thoughts we invited anthi & panagiotis to share this night with us, they jumped on it and here it is the documentation of the exhilarating evening of saturday july the 10th as recorded by nikos kyriazopoulos (who luckily does much much more better recordings than i do) in hara & lantis's yard in halandri (attiki).

xanthi (an introduction)

i could talk endlessly about xanthi... it's like a beloved stepmother to me after motherland, phokis. won't say much now as long as in mind is to upload in the future various field recordings of the city, the surrounding area and the whole province in general needless to say that if i had the time i would have done a huge field recording documentary on the entire thrace... but who knows in the future...

at the moment though... i couldn't find a finest introduction to the city and its history than the introductory guide of pashalis xanthopoulos. pashalis and dora run on behalf of the f.e.x. (filoproodos enosi xanthis) the folk museum of the city. house also for many activities including experimental musics concerts and for almost 5 years (and on...) a kind of home for activities like gigs, etc...

the recording of pashalis's 'tour' was done by kostis kilimis and is in its raw form no further manipulation was done to it...

nikos kyriazopoulos 'cycling'

out of the blue came this recording or actually the suggestion of this recording. i chanced upon nikos kyriazopoulos a couple of weeks ago during a concert at knot gallery (athens). we hang out for a drink a few days later as i was interested in his work and did we find a mutual interest in field recordings. during this discussion he mentioned a field recording he did in the city of kalamata last april while being there for easter vacations. he was cycling around the city doing a binaural field recording set. he uploaded an extract, liked it, wanted to listen to the entire thing and here it is, let's cycle with him!!!!

ilan manouach live at xanthi folk museum 10/10/09

it came up out of nothing or almost out of it... can't recall how the idea for a live set of ilan striked... all i know that it was a hellish set that night at the folk museum. he even made people leave the place as the noise turned to be unbearable for them no matter how we enjoyed it!!!

one of my beloved lo-fi / bedroom fidelity recordings of my friends vasilis and dimitris. this time under the 'at the toy room' which can either be seen as group or title name. originally released a couple of years ago as a cdr on editions_zero. but being one of my favest here it is in digital form. recommended for late night listening...

the first time panagiotis spoulos told me about dead gum thought of harsh noise guitar project or so. turned to be more different, more complexed in style, more experimental than noise.. taste it!

dimitris karayeorgos : ioannina 13/11/09

i longed trully looooong for a recording of dimitris karayeorgos. member of ksyme (late xenakis's foundation), composer who's keen on ethnological recordings but also does a lot of field recordings around his hometown ioannina and its surrounding areas.
as the online absurd idea striked suddenly i simply called and asked for an almost 30' recording. he was actually recording at that moment using rycote's zoom h4n (w/ windjammer) and did a little walk for me. what recorded is what you get. don't be puzzled if you notice 9 tracks on the map and 8 mp3s. the 9th was ommited as is was mostly a discussion with a friend rather a recording that was meant to be included in this walk...

seems that i 'consume' much much much more music / sound than i (or at least my ears) can afford... but guess there are always more interesting / bizarre sounds comin' in and of couse plenty of ideas which in other (pre-internet) times would have been shelved eternally...

an ongoing field recording project was one of them and an online attempt of it sounded as a good idea... not sure how it'll evolve but a risk is always a risk full or surprises...
